I imagine that if you are reading this post to begin with you must be a blogger, instablogger, instagrammer, interested in growing your account. Yes, numbers aren’t everything but there is no doubt about it – they help.
Now I will start by highlighting the fact I am no expert!! I’ve just been doing my research & talk from personal experience.
Algorithm? I believe we can beat it together!
Apparently, despite many of us feeling like the algorithm is conspiring against us, we just need to understand it. Despite the frustrations and backlash of many it looks like it’s not coming back any time soon.
Now, it’s currently estimated that only 10% of our followers is actually seeing our posts (first world probs I know right) however it can be pretty frustrating/disheartening when you put your heart & soul into your own little corner of the internet.
Unlike when I first started out on this little platform back in in 2014, Instagram posts appeared chronologically. I saw everyone’s posts & engaged with those I follow on a regular basis.
A few weeks ago I decided to start looking up the accounts I follow & never seemed to see anymore, ensuring that I engaged with their posts by liking & commenting. Once Instagram had showed me all of the accounts on my feed, I refreshed the the app & accounts I hadn’t seen for so long appeared. I repeated the process commenting on this next ‘layer’ of posts until I was greeted with another layer!
The algorithm needs to understand us & needs to understand what we want to see. Once it does, it will work for us. It will apparently help us grow our accounts, have more likes, comments and insta pals who actually care about what you post!
Now it’s more important than ever to stay on top of your comments, especially within the first hour of posting, otherwise your posts visibility may drastically decrease.
If someone takes the time to comment on your post, why not return the favour & like it back?
If your post gets a lot of likes and comments shortly after it’s posted, this signals to the Instagram algorithm that your post is quality content, so the post will get shown to even more of your followers.
OK so let’s be blunt here. Instagram is not just about posting your own photos. I see so many accounts where it’s all ‘me me me’. Sadly I think people forget this & the social in ‘social media’ seems nonexistent’! Build relationships with those who have the same interests as you! It’s fun!
This is why I love the My House this month hashie. It’s all about sharing the love & I’ve made so many new connections through doing that.
Instagram enables us to like and comment on others posts, share them on stories, follow hashtags, use highlights. I genuinely feel that by making full use of the app, Instagram in turn will reward you. The more you interact with others the more the algorithm will show your posts in their home feed.
There are only so many hours in the day & it might not be physically possible to look at everyone’s account.. If you can, take 15 mins or so every day to look at some people who are liking and commenting on your posts, and return the favour. Look for new accounts outside of your followers and try engaging with them too! You should really try and interact more than you actually post.
I recommend taking some time to look through accounts you are currently following. Sally once decribed inastagram as a sort of ‘online tailored magzine’ and I can really relate to this! The algorithm will learn what kind of people you like. It also will learn who it should show your posts to.
Use hashtags that will attract the right people to your account. Sometimes they might not be what you think. If you’re an interior instablogger check out what the likes of Lisa Dawson & Dee Campling are using. The algorithm will understand who you are trying to connect with and they will show your posts to more relevant people.
Try to be consistent. If you disappear for several days you may notice an instant drop in engagement. Nobody said this industry was easy! Try to post every day if you can….😊
If you have a business account then utilize your stats! By finding your peak time to post on Instagram, (when most of your followers are online), you give yourself a better chance of racking up those likes — quickly!
I truly believe as this social media phenomenon continues to grow there is space for everyone. For every friend I have that wants in on the insta world, I have 10 that appreciate what I do but wonder why I find the time/why I can be bothered!
For me, who posts a range of images certain photos tend to do well. Beautiful bouquets, whole room shots & pretty dresses tend to do well. Ads, flat lays & unstyled spaces don’t.
Therefore be real, engage, be genuine!
Hope this helps!
Until next time
